Great goals are becoming the hallmark of the NPFL these days. The latest in the series, as witnessed by adoring fans of Sunshine Stars, was by their own man, Ambrose Onyeama. The defender may not be a proven scorer but his superb volley that earned his side all three points will take some beating when Sunshine Stars' season is reviewed.
It came on 23 minutes from a corner kick won by Sunday Oluwadamilare's skinning of his marker before being blocked from shooting.
Onyeama found himself free on the edge of the box without any intense pressure. He took a step before volleying beyond the stretched arms of Wikki keeper, Emeka Nwabulu.
It was a moment that warmed up thousands of Sunshine Stars fans who had been beaten by a freak downpour that started just as the referee blew his whistle for commencement of the match. With the pitch increasingly soaked, control of the ball was a tough task for both sets of players.
Wikki's immediate response to going a goal down was a long ranger that necessitated an awkward save by Ojo Olorunleke.
The half petered out just after Sunshine's Samad Kadiri had volleyed wide soon as he latched onto a free kick by his keeper.
Contrasting weather marked the start of the second half. The warm sunshine was just as needed as the second goal, it at least helped to dry up soaked bodies in the immediate.
But the second goal never came. It should have, but for the much vilified Oluwadamilare missing a simple seater from six yards.
Wikki were good at running and building up play, but they always ran out of ideas close to the opponent's goal. They had three shots on target all game but hardly scared Olorunleke in the Sunshine goal.
RESULT: Sunshine Stars 1-0 Wikki
